The consolidation of operations of Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita
into the Metropolitan Building and Construction Department brings a unique set
of challenges for all sections. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the
Neighborhood Nuisance Code and Inspection. While in many ways the two sections
(Sedgwick County and City of Wichita) bring together a like set of principles
and parameters, there are unique differences in the requirements and
enforcement. The following information is a snapshot of the most common issues
and is meant to show the primary differences in the two governmental agencies.

The City of Wichita uses
the Minimum Housing Code, Chapter 20, to
determine the minimum standards for light,
ventilation, electricity and heating, space
requirements, etc, of both vacant and occupied
structures and dwelling units. Violations in
the City of Wichita may be reported by calling

Neighborhood Housing Inspector. **
inoperable vehicles impact our community?
Inoperable vehicles have an impact on the
health, safety and welfare of the citizens of
Sedgwick County. They serve as a breeding ground
for insects, rodents and are a danger especially
to children because of broken glass, unstable
mounting jacks or blocks etc. They are a
blighting influence upon the area, devaluing
surrounding properties and negatively impacting
the quality of life in a community.
What is an inoperable vehicle?
Sedgwick County Code defines inoperable vehicle
as: "Any vehicle that is unable to operate or move under its own
power. This term also means as a condition of being junked,
wrecked, wholly or partially dismantled, discarded, abandoned or
unable to perform the functions or purposes for which it was
originally constructed and cannot be operated in a normal and

How many inoperable vehicles can be stored on residential property?
Sedgwick County Code ("Nuisance Code") allows for
the outdoor storage of up to 9 inoperable vehicles and/or parts
equal to 9 vehicles. In the unincorporated sections of the
county outdoor storage of inoperable vehicles or vehicle parts
must be screened in such a manner that the vehicles or parts are
not visible from ground level view from the street or the

inoperable vehicles within the city limits unless stored inside
an enclosed structure. Inoperable vehicles include
those vehicles without valid registration and licensing and/or
those that cannot be legally and safely driven on Wichita
