Sheriff's Office Launches New Community Information Service
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is launching a
new community information service called Nixle. This service is designed
to deliver important and timely information to residents in our area using the
latest technology.
Through Nixle, the Sheriff’s Office will be able to deliver
trustworthy, important and neighborhood-level public safety and event
notifications instantly. Messages can be sent via text message, email, or
be available for viewing on the Nixle website. Citizens will be able to
choose how they receive messages when they sign up. There is no spam or
advertising.
Information to be sent out will include temporary
road closures due to accidents and other hazards, weather & missing person
bulletins, media releases and other valuable alerts.
Nixle is available at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office
or citizens, however standard text message rates will apply.

CRIME
ALERT: U.S. Census Scam
Here are some tips to help you recognize fraudulent activity or unofficial data collections.
If you are contacted for any of the following reasons
Do Not Participate. It is NOT the U.S. Census Bureau.
Phishing:
'Phishing' is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, social security numbers, bank account or credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by email and it often directs users to enter sensitive information at a fake web site whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.
Other Scams:
- The Census Bureau does NOT
conduct the 2010 Census via the Internet
- The Census Bureau does not
send emails about
participating in the 2010 Census
- The Census Bureau never:
- Asks for your full social security number
- Asks for money or a donation
- Sends requests on behalf of a political party
- Requests PIN codes, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.
How to report scams and bogus Census web sites
If you believe you have been contacted as part of bogus or fraudulent activity falsely representing the Census Bureau:
- In Person Scam
- Check for a valid Census ID badge
- Ask for a SECOND form of ID
- Census workers should NEVER ask to enter your home
- Call your
regional office to
verify you are in a survey
- Email Scams
- If you think it is a bogus email, do not reply or click on any links within the email.
- Do not open any attachments. Attachments may contain code that could infect your computer
- Forward the email or web site URL to the Census Bureau at ITSO.Fraud.Reporting@census.gov.
- After you forward the email to us, delete the message. You will not receive a confirmation email after forwarding the information to us. However, the Census Bureau will investigate the information and notify you of its findings.

New Sheriff Patrol Vehicle Design
After nearly 17 years, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office
is changing the paint scheme of its fleet of patrol vehicles. The award winning
design dubbed, “Shamu” by the deputies, will be replaced through attrition with
the new design beginning in November 2009.
Sheriff’s Office is looking for exceptional men and women for volunteer service in the Sheriff’s Reserve
Have you ever thought you would like to help people as a law enforcement officer? If so, Sedgwick County Sheriff Robert Hinshaw is looking for men and women with a strong commitment to community service to become a part of the Sheriff’s Reserve. If you are 21 years of age or older, are in good physical condition and have no criminal background, you may qualify for appointment to this exceptional volunteer organization which has been serving Sedgwick County citizens since 1957. To apply for the Sheriff’s Reserve, please pick up an application packet at the Wichita/Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Training Center located at 37th Street North and Meridian. Crisis Intervention Team
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department, Wichita Police Department, Kansas
Department of Corrections and local mental health agencies have teamed up to
provide more effective public safety services to individuals who suffer from
mental illnesses with the creation of the Crisis Intervention Team.
The goal of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is to supplement alternative
incarceration programs by learning to identify and redirect persons with mental
illnesses away from the jail system and toward available resources.
The 40-hour CIT training includes education about common disorders, substance
misuse and abuse, suicide, and negotiating in a crisis situation.
Criminal Justice Comprehensive Master Plan for Sedgwick County
On November 30, 2005 the Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners was presented the Comprehensive Criminal Justice Master Plan. This plan includes three phases: Design Expansion of the Sedgwick County Jail, Implementation of Alternatives and provide additional details, and Explore booking and housing fees.
Underage Drinking Laws and Driver's Licenses
Did you know...
A parent or guardian, who knowingly permits consumption of alcoholic or cereal malt beverages by persons under the age of 18 on their property, will be charged with a class B person misdemeanor, for which the minimum fine is $200.00.
Young people under the age of 21 who violate Kansas’ Minor in Possession Law multiple times will now find themselves with a suspended drivers license for 90 days (second offense) or one year (third and subsequent offenses). The first conviction results in a 30-day suspension.
