What Is COMCARE Intake and Assessment Center (CIAC)?  COMCARE’s Intake and Assessment Center is the program that is primarily responsible for handling the initial calls from those seeking access to COMCARE’s mental health and substance abuse services.  CIAC provides a user-friendly, single point of contact whereby qualified professionals visit with the caller, gathers information, and can arrange for the intake assessment as appropriate.  Other community resources may be discussed as an option for the caller, depending on the need.  Once it is determined that COMCARE is the proper agency the person will be asked to come to the center, complete basic background information and have the opportunity to meet with clinical staff members to determine treatment needs. The CIAC staff can provide information about services offered through COMCARE as well as other community resources.

How Is This Program Staffed?  Intake and Assessment has eleven full-time staff members.  Four staff, with excellent working knowledge of COMCARE’s services and community resources are dedicated to taking incoming phone calls.  Clinical staff members are comprised of a Registered Nurse and four additional clinicians who have advanced degrees in psychology, social work, nursing or a related field, along with extensive experience working in the mental health or substance abuse fields.  Our Corrections Liaison Specialist focuses on connecting  adults coming out of prison with resources to maintain themselves effectively in the community. An appointment may be scheduled with one of the two Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners to address the medication needs of an individual seeking services.

Who Calls the Intake and Assessment Center?  Intake and Assessment handles a variety of calls from Sedgwick County residents.  Others who call include the individual’s family members, mental health professionals, physicians, hospitals, schools, community agencies and the judicial system.

This program’s primary responsibility is to facilitate the first appointment for those who are not already established clients of a COMCARE program.  In order to gather the most vital information about a person and obtain a commitment to the treatment process, it is best for the person seeking services to make the call themselves.  The initial screening for services includes questions regarding problems being experienced, type of services desired, a brief history of any mental health/substance abuse services, demographics, county of residence, and insurance plan.

What Is the COMCARE Intake and Assessment Center’s Relationship With Other COMCARE Programs?  Intake and Assessment has close relationships with COMCARE’s staff at each of its programs, providing information and sometimes consultation on cases needing special consideration.  CIAC will complete intakes for people utilizing Outpatient Services (OPS), most Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) programs, and Community Support Services (CSS). However, COMCARE’s Children’s Services, Center City Homeless Program (CC), Sedgwick County Offender Assessment Program (SCOAP), and Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) schedule their own intakes at this time due to the nature of client needs.

Our goal is to make intake assessments available as quickly as possible.  Those who call Intake and Assessment with more urgent needs may be referred to Crisis Intervention Services.  Conversely, Crisis Intervention Services may refer callers who need COMCARE services, but are not in need of emergency services to Intake and Assessment.

Hours of Operation?  Phones are answered Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  For after-hours calls, messages may be left on the answering machine, with calls being returned the next business day.  If a quicker response is needed, the caller is instructed to call COMCARE’s Crisis Intervention Services hotline at 316-660-7500.
