Recommendations for Individuals and Families

Recommended Actions

SEVERE

Complete recommended actions at lower levels

  • Listen to radio or TV for current information and instructions
  • Contact business and or school to determine status of work and or school day
  • Adhere to any travel restrictions announced by local governmental authorities
  • Be prepared to shelter in place or evacuate if instructed to do so by local governmental authorities
  • Discuss children’s fears concerning possible terrorist attacks

HIGH

Complete recommended actions at lower levels

  • Exercise caution when traveling
  • If a need is announced, donate blood at a designated blood collection agency
  • Take additional precautions at public events

ELEVATED

Complete recommended actions at lower levels

  • Practice your Disaster Plan on the 11th of each month
  • Develop alternate routes to and from work or school and practice them

GUARDED

Complete recommended actions at lower level

  • Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to the proper authorities 
  • Provide volunteer services and take advantage of additional volunteer training opportunities

LOW

  • Review and print a copy of Terrorism: Preparing For The Unexpected
  • Develop a Personal / Family Disaster Plan and update as needed
  • Prepare a Disaster Supplies Kit and update as needed
  • Prepare a Shelter in Place Kit and update as needed
  • Develop emergency communication plan with family members, neighbors and friends and update as needed
  • Examine volunteer opportunities in your community; choose an agency to volunteer with and receive initial training
  • If not known to you, contact school to determine their emergency notification and evacuation plans for children

Examples of Suspicious Activity Include:

  • A stranger loitering in your neighborhood or a vehicle cruising the streets repeatedly
  • Someone peering into cars or the windows of a home
  • A high volume of traffic going to and coming from a home on a daily basis
  • Someone loitering around schools, parks or secluded areas
  • Strange odors coming from a house or building
  • Open or broken doors and windows at a closed business or an unoccupied residence
  • Someone tampering with electrical, gas, water or sewer systems without an identifiable company vehicle and uniform
  • Anything YOU feel is out of the ordinary SHOULD BE REPORTED!
