EMT / MICT

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a basic level pre-hospital health care provider.  The EMT-B training program is generally one college semester in length (approx. 10 college credit hours). EMT's receive the necessary training, hospital critical care area rotations or field internship to perform the following basic life support skills:

In Sedgwick County EMS, EMT's staff all volunteer and reserve ambulances and serve as part-time relief personnel who are sick, injured or vacationing.

Mobile Intensive Care Technician (Paramedic)

Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) or Paramedic is the highest level of pre-hospital emergency care provider in the State of Kansas.  The requirement to become an MICT is the completion of an approved D.O.T. 1,200 hour training course.   MICT's provide advanced emergency pre-hospital life support.

Advanced medical procedures that MICT's (paramedic's) deliver include:

Sedgwick County paramedics are required to maintain state certification by attending at least 60 hours of continuing medical education every two years. The Training Division of EMS provides many of  these hours to each technician. We use classroom methods with a 2:1 ratio for many of these hours. Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and other classes are available during the year on a larger scale. Most of the local hospitals provide monthly or quarterly contact hours to review specific medical and trauma related cases.
