Volunteers
Two volunteer services support Sedgwick County EMS by providing first responders, medical standby personnel, assistance on units and public education programs.
The Derby Volunteer Division of EMS provides first responder service to Derby, Kansas, a community in southeast Sedgwick County. This volunteer division began serving Derby in 1971 as a Basic Life Support service. Currently, Derby has 31 members in its ranks. In 2003, Derby members volunteered over 6,534 hours.
Sedgwick County EMS Reserves began in 1985 and have grown to over 35 members
today. These dedicated volunteers provide support to EMS by providing an EMT
"third-person" on units, medical standby personnel at large civic events and
uniformed assistance at public education programs. The Reserves donated over
10,062 hours to Sedgwick County EMS in 2003. The Reserves also man the
Valley Center volunteer ambulance during the evening and weekend hours
Both volunteer divisions are supported by Sedgwick County EMS through equipment, supplies, vehicle maintenance, uniforms and training. All volunteer personnel are required to be certified at the EMT level or higher.
