Sedgwick County Fire District #1 received
Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation
International, Inc. (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the
CFAI's voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. The District
received accreditation on August 21, 2003. Sedgwick County Fire District #1 is
one of 89 agencies worldwide to achieve the Accredited Agency status with CFAI
and is only one department of two in Kansas to be accredited.
The Commission on Fire Accreditation
International, Inc. is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service
agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment
and accreditation in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the
enhancement of service delivery to their communities. The CFAI process is
voluntary, and provides an agency with an improvement model to assess their
service delivery and performance internally and then works with a team of peers
from other agencies to evaluate their completed self-assessment.
"The (Sedgwick County) department is commended
for its participation in the very comprehensive and detailed process," said
David R. Burns, Peer Assessor Team Leader representing CFAI and City of Ankeny,
IA Fire Chief. "All members of the fire district and county government staff
were very professional, responsive, and candid."
The two and a half year process involved a
significant commitment and was accomplished of all members of the Sedgwick
County Fire District. The process reviews fire operations, strategic planning,
human resource and finance aspects of the Fire District. This prestigious award
enhances the District's ability to secure endowment and grant funds from both
private and public agencies.
"Public safety is a number one priority for
Sedgwick County," said Sedgwick County Commission Chairman Tim Norton. "We are
very proud of Fire District #1 for this accomplishment and what it means for the
citizens of Sedgwick County."
The District is in the process of preparing it’s
1st Annual Compliance Report. The report must address several
strategic and specific recommendations that were contained with in the final
report submitted for the District to address. These reports are required
annually to maintain accredited status. The District will complete 4 compliance
reports and then will go through the accreditation process again in 2008.
