For the second year, I had the opportunity to take a
burn survivor from Kansas to the Oklahoma
Burn Camp at Camp Dry Gulch, near Pryor
Oklahoma.
The camp is open to kids who
have been burned as well as any other type of disfiguring injury.
The camp gives the kids the opportunity to just be kids for a few
days and spend some time with other kids who are going through a lot of the
same experiences. The camp is
funded by the Tulsa fire safety clowns.
There is no cost for the campers or counselors.
The young man I took this year was Doug, a 15 year old
from Abilene, Ks.
He was burned about five years ago on his chest, stomach and arm.
He was treated at the burn center here at Via Christi St. Francis
Burn Center. Doug had a great
time at camp and wants to go back next year.
I am already looking forward to my third trip.
I also took Gage, my camper from last year.
This year he went as a junior sponsor. Next year he will go as a
sponsor.
Burn camp is one of the most rewarding experiences that
I have had in twenty two years with the fire department.
Being around these kids reminds me why it is so important to teach
fire prevention and safety to the kids.

If anyone knows of a child who has been burned or has a
disfiguring injury and may want to attend the 2010 Burn Camp, please contact
me through the Sedgwick County Fire Department at (316) 660-3473.
Respectfully,
Steve McDaniel, Lt. 35B
