Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association

What is it?

The Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) is an independent, non-profit corporation that is governed by a Board of Directors elected from members with more then two years of CPAAA membership.  It is composed of graduates of the Wichita Sedgwick County Citizens Police Academy only.  The CPAAA is funded solely by member dues and corporate donations and receives no funding form either the Wichita Police Department or the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

What is the CPAAA's purpose?

The purpose of the CPAAA is to assure and implement community awareness of the criminal justice system, to assist in fostering better community relationships among citizens and the members of the criminal justice system, and to provide volunteer support to law enforcement activities which directly effect the community.  It is organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes under IRS code.  It is not a fund raising organization for the Police Department or the Sheriff's Office.

What does the CPAAA do?

The CPAAA provides educational activities for it's members. provides volunteer support to both the Wichita Police and Sedgwick County Sheriff Departments.  It interfaces with the community, generally through social activities and by providing briefings to community organizations as requested, and it hosts or supports special activities such as outside speakers, departmental speakers, etc.

What are CPAAA's educational activities?

Educational activities through the CPAAA are aimed at making members better informed citizens, and to allow them to interface more knowledgeable with other citizens in the community.  Guest Speakers and/or hands-on demonstrations are featured during general meetings which are held once a month.  Some topics and speakers include:

  • Officials from local, state and federal government agencies
  • Police and Sheriff Command Staff personnel
  • Sedgwick County Coroner
  • Scams and Frauds
  • Fraternal Order of Police
  • Wichita Crime Commission
  • Mock Trials
  • Arson Investigation
  • Wichita Police Department Bomb Squad
  • Wichita Police Department Air Section
  • Airport Safety
  • Private Security

In addition the CPAAA has a Federal Class once each year which is sponsored by Federal Magistrate Judge Karen Humphrys and lasts four weeks, one night per week.  There are special classes in personal safety, etc., and special tours or such facilities as the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center, and various correctional facilities. 

What about the CPAAA volunteer activities?

CPAAA members are involved in activities within the Wichita Police Department, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office as well as in the community.  

In the Police Department members work in the Investigations Division assisting with burglary, domestic violence and forgery/fraud investigations.  The CPAAA was instrumental in developing the Gas Run Off or "GRO" project which has recovered over $5000 in losses due to gas run offs.  In addition the organization also works with the Exploited and Missing Child Unit, the Special Investigations Bureau, the Accident Follow Up Unit, Records Section, Training Bureau, Community Affairs Section, and the School Liaison Section.

In the Sheriff's Office members work in Training, the Road Patrol Office and Investigations.

In the community members assist with annual Safety and Health Fairs, the annual Christmas Crusade which provides toys to under privilege kids, and in different symposiums and seminars.
