Division Commander

The Support Division was created in November 2006 as a result of the Sheriff’s Office reorganization. Several sections previously under command of the Technical Division, and whose functions were supportive within the Sheriff’s Office, were consolidated in the newly formed Support Division. Support Division Section and Unit responsibilities are outlined below.
Records Section
The Records Section operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is the central repository for many of the official documents and records generated during the normal course of Sheriff’s Office business. These include the written reports prepared by deputies after investigating criminal offenses or traffic accidents, Protection from Abuse or Stalking orders, and criminal history records. This section is additionally charged with entering and maintaining all information regarding wanted or missing persons, stolen property, and other data accessed through the NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and the state-wide wanted persons computer files. Records daily duties include the transcription of dictated deputy reports, filing, and data entry into the Sheriff’s computer system. Copies of reports, mug shots, criminal backgrounds, and other records information are provided to requesters in compliance with the Kansas Open Records Act.
Property, Evidence & Supply Section
The Property Evidence and Supply Section is comprised of the Property Evidence storage facility and Central Supply facility. The responsibilities of this section fall into two major areas.
Property and Evidence (P&E) is responsible for all evidence, found property, and personal property collected or seized by Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators. P&E duties include marking, cataloguing, and storing thousands of evidential items. Precise records must be maintained, detailing the chain-of-custody and disposal of every item stored in P&E. P&E Deputies are on call 24/7 and using a van and or trailer often respond directly to a crime scene to transport large evidential items or when a large quantity of evidence is collected. They also transport evidence for forensic examination, make arrangements for the sale of seized property, and maintain dozens of seized vehicles awaiting court forfeiture proceedings. Another P&E responsibility is the temporary storage of inmate property when they are sent to prison and the inmate has been unwilling or unable to dispose of items they accumulated while in the Sedgwick County jail.
The Supply Section is responsible for ordering, issuing, and maintaining an inventory of the uniform and equipment items used by Sheriff’s Deputies. Deputies are given their initial issue of uniforms by the Supply Section, and receive replacement items from Supply when needed. Selected items of equipment including uniforms, batons, handcuffs and flashlights are part of the Supply inventory.
Training Section
The Training Section is responsible for running the Sheriff’s deputy and detention academies, in-service training, recruiting, and the firearms range. In a normal year the Training Section presents three to five basic training academies instructing deputy and detention recruits in the essential skills they need to perform their jobs.
Training is done in compliance with state mandates, ensuring every commissioned (sworn) employee is provided with the minimum 40 hours per year in-service training required by Kansas state law.
Recruiting job applicants and processing them through the hiring process is another Training Section duty. The hiring process requires the training section to maintain detailed records and applicant files documenting written, physical agility, mental health, and drug testing, along with oral interview boards and an extensive background investigation. As a result of the 2006 reorganization two deputies were assigned to the Training Section to conduct background investigations of the hundreds of Sheriff’s Office applicants.
The firearms range is also a function of the Training Section. Deputy recruits are given their basic firearms instruction here, continuing in-service training is provided for deputies, and quarterly firearms qualifications are conducted at the range.
Offender Registration Unit
The Offender Registration Unit (ORU) was established in June 2008. ORU also processes Carry Concealed Handgun applications and fingerprints individuals for background and licensing requirements.
