  1. I am on active duty in the military but the vehicle is in my spouse’s name.  Am I required to pay taxes on the vehicle?

    Answer:
    Yes.  A vehicle is only exempt from taxes when the active duty military member's name is on the vehicle title. 

  2. I am in the military but a Kansas resident.  Am I required to pay taxes on my vehicle?

    Answer: Kansas Military Personnel
    Kansas residents in the military may qualify for exemption from property taxation in Kansas on no more than two vehicles if all of the following criteria is met. 

    • The military person is shown on the title as the legal owner of the motor vehicle(s) for which the exemption is requested
    • The military person claims Kansas as his/her permanent state with the military
    • The military person is in the full-time regular military service of the United States or the military person is a member of the National Guard or Reserves and mobilized (in receipt of orders to report for active duty at a certain date)
    • The motor vehicle is not used in or arising from a trade or business

    If the criteria above is met the following items must be brought in along with the other documents required for registering or renewing a vehicle license plate.  These documents must be brought in every time a new vehicle is registered or a vehicle is renewed to receive the exemption.

    • Current full month LES
    • Current orders or ORB or ERB
    • Military ID
    • Completed
    • Military Affidavit

    Leased vehicles are NOT exempt from property taxes.

  3. I am in the military.  What is required to renew or register my vehicle in Kansas?

    Answer:
    Non-Kansas Military Personnel
    Non-Kansas military personnel have the option of registering in the county they reside in or in their home state of record. If the military person registers in the state of Kansas, they may be eligible for exemption from property taxation. This exemption applies to property taxes only, it does not apply to sales tax on vehicles. Vehicles coming in to Kansas must have been registered in the previous location for at least 6 months or it will be subject to sales tax, if not paid in the previous location. All of the following criteria must be met in order to receive the exemption.

    • The military person is shown on the title as the legal owner of the motor vehicle(s) for which the exemption is requested
    • The military person is in the full-time, regular military service of the United States
    • The military person is absent from his/her permanent residence solely by reason of military orders
    • The military person is stationed in Kansas and resides in Sedgwick County
    • The motor vehicle is not used in or arising from a trade or business
    • At the time of registration/renewal the vehicle(s) is/are kept or is being used in Sedgwick County

    If the criteria above is met the following items must be brought in along with the other documents required for registering or renewing a vehicle license plate. These documents must be brought in every time a new vehicle is registered or a vehicle is renewed to receive the exemption.

    • Current full month LES
    • Current orders or ORB or ERB
    • Military ID
    • Completed
    • Military Affidavit

  4. I am a military dependent. Am I exempt from paying property tax? 

    Answer: No, only active duty members of the military are exempt, and must be the registered owner on the title. 

  5. Why do I pay taxes on my leased vehicle when I’m in the military? 

    Answer: The leased vehicle is legally owned by the leasing company.  That company is not exempt from taxes.
     
  6. I have been transferred to another state but my vehicle is registered in Kansas. I do not claim Kansas as my home state of record. My tags need to be renewed. How do I renew them in Kansas?

    Answer: If you left the state, you are not eligible to renew in Kansas. You have to register in the state where you are stationed.

    Military personnel who do not claim Kansas as their home state of residence and are not stationed in Kansas on active duty are not eligible for Kansas title and registration.
