The soil at the Union Pacific railyard at 29th and Grove contains a chemical called trichloroethene (TCE).

TCE from the site has contaminated underground water for 2.9 miles from the railyard south to Murdock Avenue.

In February 2023, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a final plan to clean up the contamination.

Work plans for the remediation of the site are under development, and they expect work to begin in Fall-Winter 2023.
