More than 50 people attended a ceremony this afternoon to help the Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners formally open the doors to a one-stop shop for area builders and homeowners. The Ronald Reagan building at 271 W. 3 rd now houses the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Division (MABCD), Metropolitan Area Planning Department (MAPD), and Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO). These joint agencies oversee planning, zoning, construction, and code enforcement throughout the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County.
Commission Chairman Jim Howell welcomed those gathered at the event and Commissioner Karl Peterjohn unveiled a framed portrait of former President Reagan along with the Resolution naming the building. Wichita’s Mayor Jeff Longwell and Wichita Area Builders’ Association President Wess Galyon shared comments during the event as well.
The commission voted to purchase the building in 2014 $4.9 million as a joint project between the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County to consolidate services. A remodel of floors one to three ended October 2016 after 5½ months. The total project’s estimated actual cost is slightly more than $10 million, nearly half of the project’s original estimated cost. Departments or divisions selected to fill floors four through six have not yet been announced.
