Members of the media are invited to a live mosquito trap demonstration event hosted by the Sedgwick County Health Department at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 7 in the Great Plains Nature Center parking lot, 6232 E. 29th St. N., Wichita.

At this event, media will be able to take pictures and shoot video of the demonstration, and ask questions about trapping mosquitoes, West Nile virus testing of mosquitoes, and the Health Department’s “Fight the Bite!” prevention campaign.

The number and types of mosquitoes found in the traps guide efforts by the Sedgwick County Health Department and the City of Wichita to reduce the number of mosquitoes. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of human cases of West Nile virus infection in Sedgwick County.

Mosquito traps are placed in Sedgwick County in coordination with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Biological Survey (KBS). Christopher Rogers, crustacean taxonomist and ecologist with KBS, will demonstrate mosquito traps and answer questions.
