(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Work to replace 17 transmission power poles downed by storms last night in southeast Sedgwick County continues to affect traffic on a portion of 55th Street South and South Rock Road. Electrical crews blocked off traffic completely today on 55th Street South from Rock Road to Webb Road because of large power lines in the roadway. They have since removed the downed structures and hope to finish replacing the poles by the end of tonight, so 55th Street South can reopen to traffic.

On Rock Road, north and southbound traffic is currently reduced to one lane in each direction for about one mile from East Freedom Drive, which is just north of 63rd Street South near the city limits of Derby, to Lyons Circle, which is just south of 47th Street South. Electrical crews that have worked all day to remove downed power poles and lines will stop work overnight and resume at 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.

Sedgwick County encourages drivers to avoid these areas if possible. Those who must commute on Rock Road are asked to drive slowly and cautiously through work zones to keep crews and other motorists safe.
