Sedgwick County Declares a State of Local Disaster Emergency

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Sedgwick County and Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) Chairman Ryan Baty have declared a State of Local Disaster Emergency regarding the massive pallet fire that broke out last night and continues to burn uncontrollably outside Evergreen Recycle at 302 W. 53rd Street N. in Park City. This proclamation now allows Sedgwick County to access state emergency resources to help Sedgwick County Fire District #1 (SCFD #1) battle the blaze and keep it from spreading. Specifically, SCFD #1 is working with the Air National Guard to have a helicopter drop water on the advancing north side of the fire, which is difficult for ground crews to reach. Sedgwick County Emergency Management is coordinating with state partners and the Air National Guard for resources and support.

Currently, SCFD #1 has Battalion 32 and several fire companies fighting the fire, with seven apparatus on scene. The Wichita Fire Department (WFD) is also assisting with one apparatus. No injuries or damage to structures has been reported at this time, and crews are working diligently to protect nearby businesses.

Strong, straight-line winds and extreme heat are making the firefight more challenging for crews. To keep firefighters well hydrated and safe, SCFD #1 is providing water, food and sunscreen and giving them frequent breaks. An air-conditioned rehab tent provided by South Central Kansas Healthcare Coalition (SCKSHCC) allows firefighters to cool down and have their vitals checked. Additionally, crews are rotating out every four hours.
