(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – The 18th Judicial District Court has increased payments for Sedgwick County citizens called for jury duty. Effective immediately, jurors will earn $10 for the first day of service and $30 for every day following, plus mileage to and from the courthouse.
“Increasing our compensation to citizens who give of their time for jury service is long overdue,” said Chief Judge Jeffrey Goering, 18th Judicial District Court.
For years, jurors were paid $10 per day, a $2 daily stipend for lunch, plus mileage. Over five days, that added up to $60, plus mileage. Now, a juror serving five days will be paid $130, plus mileage.
The Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) approved funding for the increased juror pay last year as part of the District Court 2025 budget.
“Jury duty is essential for a fair and impartial justice system, and Sedgwick County is indebted to those who give their time and careful consideration to court cases that are often emotional and complicated,” said BoCC Chair Ryan Baty. “The least we can do is provide fair compensation to jurors who rearrange their busy lives on short notice to serve this civic duty.”
All jury panels are called for a one-week period. Jurors who are selected will serve until the court case is over. Although some cases last longer than one week, the vast majority average three or four days.
