(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) crews are still on the scene of a fire that started last night, April 15, 2025, at Construction, Demolition & Recycle (CDR) landfill, 4250 W. 37th St. North, owned by Cornejo & Sons. Firefighters doused the flames with a large amount of water overnight, and the blaze is now contained but still burning. Because of a limited water supply in the area and windy conditions today, SCFD 1 leadership has decided to let the fire burn itself out, but will keep crews on scene to ensure the flames do not spread. Cornejo & Sons also has several crew members on site and is assisting fire crews.

A caller to 9-1-1 last night at 8 p.m. reported the fire at the CDR landfill. First arriving crews found a large tree, stump and brush pile on fire. Despite efforts to extinguish the blaze, the burn pile is now estimated at 60 feet wide, 100 feet long and nearly 20 feet tall. Smoke is blowing across K-96, and drivers in the area are urged to use caution. Cornejo & Sons has placed signs on the highway to let drivers know the fire is contained so there is no need to call 9-1-1 and report it.

The cause of the initial fire is still under investigation. There is no dollar loss at this point because the fire has burned only waste materials.
