(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Sedgwick County Parks Department in partnership with Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) will be conducting a prescribed burn today at Sedgwick County Northeast Park, 7390 N 127th St E, Wichita, KS 67226. It is the intention for the prescribed burn to begin around noon, pending the correct weather conditions. This burn will benefit the land at Northeast Sedgwick County Park with nutrient and water cycling, reduce wildfire fuel loads and remove invasive species.
The prescribed burn will be broken up into six smaller burns, totaling 268 acres of the 648-acre park. The burn sites are kept at minimal acreage to ensure control and safety. Utilizing prescribed fire is a secure and efficient method for improving native rangelands. It reduces fuel buildup while lowering the threat of wildfires. Additionally, prescribed fire stands out as an economical approach to responsible land management.
Sedgwick County Emergency Communications and Emergency Management departments are aware of this burn plan. Also, residents in the area were notified of the controlled burn taking place, weather permitting, between March 19 – April 19, 2024.
