Information for Submitting Agencies

The Forensic Laboratories accept evidence submitted by all fire departments and law enforcement agencies within Sedgwick County, KS as well as the Sedgwick County District Coroner. Forensic Science support is also available to fire departments, law enforcement and/or coroners from surrounding counties.

  • The laboratory does not provide analysis for private citizens or for civil litigations.
  • Examinations are requested through Pre-logging Evidence (see Web Portal Guide) or the use of a signed Evidence Chain of Custody Document.
  • Evidence may be submitted at the Evidence Intake window M-F between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (closed 11:30 to 12:30).
  • The contributor(s) agrees to allow the Forensic Laboratories to determine, based upon existing policies, when submitted items will not be examined as requested.
  • The Forensic Laboratories reserve the right to approve deviations regarding the test methods utilized when appropriate and to subcontract for analysis when necessary.
  • The contributor(s) agrees to the reporting policies of the laboratory.
  • Unless otherwise indicated on a laboratory report, items of evidence will be returned to the submitting agency following examination or at any time deemed appropriate by the RFSC. An exception is made for items of evidence submitted for Post-mortem Toxicology examination, which will be retained and disposed according to RFSC policy.
  • Activity dates are maintained as part of the case record and the date range of laboratory activities is provided to the contributor on the laboratory reports.
    • Note: For reports that are not generated within LIMS, the laboratory activities are provided to the contributor on reports by including the date of case submission and the report date. The exact dates of specific laboratory activities are maintained in the case record.

Case Status Inquiry and Evidence Pre-log

Case Status Inquiry (Download Laboratory Reports/Check Case Status)

Case Inquiry provides law enforcement agencies access to specific information about the status of evidence submitted to the Regional Forensic Science Center Laboratory for analysis. Once exams are complete and released by the laboratory, reports and other case specific documents are available for download through the web portal in PDF format.

Evidence Pre-log (Evidence Submissions)

Pre-log is our web-based system available to help expedite the evidence submission process. Evidence Pre-log is solely for the law enforcement contributors of the Regional Forensic Science Center Laboratory. The system enables law enforcement agencies to "pre-log" evidence submission information prior to delivery to a Regional Forensic Science Center Laboratory. Once completed, the agency submits the evidence to the Evidence Receiving section for processing. If necessary, a KIOSK is available in the Evidence Receiving area for pre-logging evidence.
