Health Issue Briefs
- Infant Mortality - Infant mortality is a key factor in a community’s health. Inside this brief issued by the Sedgwick County Health Department are statistics, including infant mortality rates, leading causes of infant mortality, risk factors, neighborhood factors and personal factors. There are also recommendations for practice to reduce infant mortality.
- Mental Health - Mental illnesses are common in the United States and can begin at any age. In Sedgwick County, over 40 percent of residents surveyed as part of the 2013 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, said their physical or mental health kept them from normal activities such as self-care, work or recreation. This issue brief will address mental illness in general, as the issue has many moving parts and cannot be comprehensively addressed in one brief.
- Social Determinants of Health (SDH) - are the conditions, in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies and political systems. This issue brief will provide definitions for disparities, equity, equality and the SDH, examine various types of SDHs and discuss the relationships between SDH and their impact on the health status across populations.
