In many people, the first signs of mpox are similar to the flu – fever, headache, body aches, swollen glands and tiredness. Not everyone experiences these symptoms.

Most people with mpox develop a rash or sores. These can start on the face or mouth and spread to other body parts, including on or around genitals.

Symptoms usually appear within a week or two of exposure but can take up to three weeks.
