Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on September 1 st , 2016, one of our deputies stopped a car in the 1100 block of North Tyler Road. During the course of that encounter the driver of the vehicle pointed a handgun at the deputy. The deputy fired his service weapon at the driver who then proceeded north on Tyler Road eventually striking a house in the 1500 block north. The driver was found to be wounded and died later at a local hospital. The driver was later identified as Caleb J. Douglas, an 18 year old man from Wichita. An autopsy was conducted on Mr. Douglas and the report of that autopsy is now complete.

The Coroner’s Office has determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head. Furthermore, the bullet recovered from Mr. Douglas’ was matched to the handgun found in his car and the manner of death is determined to be suicide. The District Attorney’s Office will determine if any laws were violated by the actions of the deputy and the Professional Standards Unit of the Sheriff’s Office will now complete their investigation to determine if the deputy’s actions are within the standards of our use of force policy.
