On February 24, 2023, at approximately 9:00 AM., an inmate was assaulted with a makeshift weapon, in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, by another inmate. The makeshift weapon was recovered by staff members.

 The victim was transported to a local area hospital by emergency medical services, treated for their injuries, and released back to the Detention Facility. The Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division was contacted and is processing the scene.

 The victim in this incident is a 37-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since November 3, 2022, booked on theft and possession w/ intent to use drug paraphernalia. 

 The suspect in this incident is a 41-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since January 13, 2021, booked on two counts of 1st Degree Murder.

 This is the only inmate-on-inmate improvised weapon assault of 2023 for the Sedgwick County Detention Facility. The motive for the assault is unknown. It is unknown at this time if the incident was gang-related.

 Ensuring the safety and security of the inmates, staff, and facility is of paramount importance to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. This incident is under investigation for criminal conduct as well as a review of the circumstances surrounding the manufacturing of the improvised cutting device.
