On May 4, 2019, at approximately 10:35 p.m., an inmate was found unresponsive in Pod 2 of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility. Detention Staff and Medical Staff completed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until emergency medical services (E.M.S.) arrived at approximately 10:44 p.m. 

The inmate was treated by E.M.S. until approximately 11:00 p.m., at which time he was pronounced deceased. Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigations and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations were contacted and processed the scene. The deceased inmate was taken to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine an exact cause of death. Preliminary reports indicate the inmate died from self-inflicted asphyxiation. 

This incident was the second in-custody death of 2019. Since 2016, there have been approximately 169 suicide attempts in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.
