On February 29, 2024, at approximately 7:11 a.m., detention staff located an unresponsive inmate in her bed in Pod 21 of the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility. On-site medical staff and Emergency Medical Services (E.M.S.) were notified and attempted life-saving measures. The inmate was pronounced at the scene at approximately 8:00 a.m.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified, and with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, are looking into the death.
The inmate, a 41-year-old female, had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since February 9, 2024, for cases related to battery and disorderly conduct. The inmate had a history of chronic medical problems that resulted in being hospitalized twice during this incarceration. She received care as recently as February 28, 2024 where no emergent concerns were discovered. Preliminary examination indicates a major medical event occurring in the early morning hours. This is the third in-custody death this year.
