On May 5, 2023, at approximately 1115 hours, an inmate was found unresponsive in a housing pod inside the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility. Detention Staff and Medical Staff performed C.P.R. until E.M.S. arrived and took over patient care.

The inmate was treated by E.M.S. and transported to a local hospital where at approximately 1213 hours they were pronounced deceased. Kansas Bureau of Investigations (K.B.I.) was contacted in accordance with state statute. Sheriff Investigations processed the scene. The deceased inmate will be transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary reports indicate the inmate died from self-inflicted asphyxiation.

The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since April 14, 2022, for one count of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and two counts of battery of a law enforcement officer. The inmate’s next of kin were notified.

The inmate is a 38-year-old, white male, from Wichita. This is the first in-custody death of 2023.
