A deputy located an unresponsive inmate in a housing pod inside the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility on June 22, 2023, at approximately 1:00 A.M. Detention staff and medical staff performed C.P.R until E.M.S. arrived and took over patient care.

The inmate was transported by E.M.S. to a local hospital where at approximately 1:50 A.M. they were pronounced deceased. The Kansas Bureau of Investigations (K.B.I.) was contacted in accordance with state statute. Sheriff Investigations processed the scene. The deceased inmate will be transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine an exact cause of death. Preliminary reports indicate the inmate died from self-inflicted asphyxiation.

The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since June 15, 2023. The inmate had their preliminary hearing for one count of Aggravated Robbery on June 21, 2023. Family members of the inmate have been notified.

The inmate is a 34-year-old, Hispanic male, from Wichita. This is the second in-custody death of 2023.
