SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. – On April 23, 2025, the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners approved the settlement of two federal lawsuits related to alleged misconduct by a former Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy. The lawsuits stem from incidents that occurred in July 2022.

Under the terms of the agreements, Sedgwick County will pay $200,000 to resolve case 22-CV-1124 and $175,000 to resolve case 22-CV-1125. As part of the agreed settlements, Sedgwick County asserts that all claims are without merit but has resolved to settle to avoid significant defense costs, expenses, and risk of litigation.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office opened a criminal investigation into the misconduct in July 2022, which led to the individual’s prosecution and conviction. The individual is now serving a prison sentence.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office upholds high standards of professional conduct and accountability. Sheriff Jeff Easter continues taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in custody and to maintain public trust.
