SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, is investigating the death of an inmate following an apparent suicide attempt at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility.
On Feb. 18, 2025, at approximately 6:51 p.m., detention staff located an unresponsive 43-year-old male inmate in a cell within the facility. Detention deputies and on-site medical staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department responded and continued resuscitation efforts. The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:32 p.m.
Per Kansas state law, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified and, with assistance from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, is conducting an investigation into the incident. The family of the inmate has been notified of his death.
The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since Feb. 18, 2025, on charges related to aggravated assault and interference with law enforcement.
This marks the second in-custody death in Sedgwick County this year.
