***UPDATE***

The deputy who was admitted to the hospital as a result of the injuries sustained while attempting to gain control of the inmate has been released from the hospital. It is anticipated the deputy will return to full duty in approximately 2 weeks.

On October 18th, 2018 two Sedgwick County Detention Deputies were assaulted in the Detention Facility.

At approximately 8:50 p.m. two detention deputies were preparing an inmate for movement from booking to housing. Part of the procedure in moving an inmate from booking to housing includes having the inmate showered, searched and the issued clothing. During this procedure, the inmate became non-compliant and combative. The detention deputies attempted to gain control of the inmate and the inmate assaulted the deputies.

The altercation resulted in minor injuries to one deputy and potentially serious injuries to the second deputy. One deputy was admitted to the hospital for treatment. The deputy’s injuries are being evaluated as to the extent and potential treatment options.

The inmate, Stephanie Dawn Beltz, had previously been booked into the facility on a misdemeanor charge of Criminal Trespass by the Wichita Police Department. Stephanie Dawn Beltz has now been booked for Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.

The case will be presented to the District Attorney for review.
