WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, and Dr. Molik, a pediatric trauma surgeon at Wesley Children’s Hospital, will hold a joint news conference to emphasize the importance of firearm safety and highlight ongoing efforts to provide the community with free cable-style and trigger locks for guns.

This initiative comes in response to two recent incidents in which children under the age of ten gained access to unsecured firearms, leading to tragic outcomes. These preventable incidents highlight the urgent need for responsible firearm storage.

Event Details:
• Date: Monday, March 24th
• Time: 2:00 PM
• Location: Wichita-Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Training Center - 4310 E. 19th St. North

Dr. Kim Molik states, “We are seeing an alarming increase in firearm injuries, particularly among children harming other children. we have already treated six pediatric firearm injuries. These are tragic numbers for incidents that are entirely preventable.”

The Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and Wesley Children’s Hospital, which is partnering with us, are dedicated to preventing these accidents by providing free cable-style and trigger locks to gun owners. These simple yet effective safety tools help ensure firearms are securely stored and out of children's reach.

Dr. Molik will offer a medical perspective on the dangers of unsecured firearms and the injuries they can cause, while Sheriff Easter will discuss law enforcement’s role in promoting firearm safety and responsible gun ownership.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free gun locks available at the Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, with no identification required to receive one. By working together, law enforcement, medical professionals, and the community can help prevent firearm-related tragedies and keep the children of Wichita safe.
