The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, a Wichita Police Department officer involved shooting that occurred on July 31, 2024, in the area of Hillside and Elm.
At approximately 11:18 PM on July 31, 2024, Wichita Police Department Officers, riding as a two-officer vehicle, observed a black Chevy Impala leaving the area of a drug trafficking complaint. Mr. Russell drew a firearm from his waistband and pointed it towards officer A. Officer B, had moved to the rear of the vehicle and through the rear window observed Mr. Russell point a firearm at Officer A. Officer B then observed Mr. Russell point the firearm at his own head and fired. After the gun shot fired by Mr. Russell Officer A discharged his firearm.
Additional officers arrived on the scene and performed CPR until EMS arrived and pronounced Mr. Russell deceased at the scene.
No officers were injured during this incident.
