Board of County Commissioners

  • Commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 as Herb Duncan Day in Sedgwick County. Mr. Duncan served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962, is a member of the American Legion, founded the Veteran’s Lectureship program, and has volunteered for the Kansas Honor Flight Program.
  • A proclamation declaring January 21 through 27 as School Choice Week was adopted by commissioners. School Choice Week is celebrated to raise awareness of the need for effective educational options locally through traditional public schools, public magnet schools, and nonpublic schools.  
  • Board appointments: Mr. Rob Benton, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Civil Service Board.
  • A county conditional use was approved by commissioners with restrictions.
    • This is for a borrow pit on property east of K-15 Highway and north of 95th Street South.
    • The intent is for the dirt to be used for construction project(s) in Derby by a contractor removing dirt. The end result will be a pond for private use by the landowner.
  • Commissioners received a quarterly report from the Sedgwick County Extension Center.
    • Agents and volunteers reached nearly 8900 residents with Medicare open enrollment last year.

Christmas Tree Recycling

  • Recycle your real Christmas tree from now until January 23.
  • Make sure to remove all ornaments and lights before dropping off your tree.
  • Take your tree to the any of the many locations around the County to convert it into mulch. The mulch is available for anyone to pick up.
