Make sure your pets are on a leash and DO NOT follow them onto the ice if they come off leash. If your pet falls into the ice, DO NOT risk your own life attempting to rescue them. CALL 911 and trained rescuers with specialty equipment will be sent out to help.
Children should always be supervised near an ice covered body of water. Never leave children alone.
It is highly recommended to bring someone with you when close to an iced over body of water. Always makes sure a cell phone is available in case of an emergency.
Be aware that white ice indicates the presence of air bubbles, which makes the surface weaker.
If you DO fall through the ice:
Try to remain calm
Spread your arms out over the unbroken ice
Kick your feet, and try to pull yourself onto the ice.
Once out of the water, do not stand. Keep your weight distributed over a large area to avoid breaking the ice.
Slide or roll towards the shore.
DO NOT attempt to rescue someone who has fallen into the ice, if the ice could not support them it will not support you, CALL 911 immediately
