It’s the holiday season and Fire District 1 has 12 safety tips we'd like to share with you to keep you and your family safe.
- Make sure all holiday lights work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
- Turn off all tree lights and decorations when not in use.
- Put cold fireplace ashes in a metal container outside the house.
- Keep children away from hot stoves while cooking
- Keep space heaters away from combustible materials.
- Never leave candles burning when you are not at home.
- When hanging decorations use a step stool or a ladder to reach higher places.
- Remember to test your smoke detectors monthly.
- Keep trees and holiday decorations away from fireplaces, radiators, and other heat sources.
- Make sure your tree has a stable base, and if it's a real tree, make sure it's well watered.
- If you're using an artificial tree, make sure it's “Fire resistant” or UL (underwriters laboratories) listed.
- Keep a fire extinguisher close by and know how to use it. Remember the PASS rule. PULL/AIM/SQUEEZE AND SWEEP.
