It’s the holiday season and Fire District 1 has 12 safety tips we'd like to share with you to keep you and your family safe.

  1. Make sure all holiday lights work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
  2. Turn off all tree lights and decorations when not in use.
  3. Put cold fireplace ashes in a metal container outside the house.
  4. Keep children away from hot stoves while cooking
  5. Keep space heaters away from combustible materials.
  6. Never leave candles burning when you are not at home.
  7. When hanging decorations use a step stool or a ladder to reach higher places.
  8. Remember to test your smoke detectors monthly.
  9. Keep trees and holiday decorations away from fireplaces, radiators, and other heat sources.
  10. Make sure your tree has a stable base, and if it's a real tree, make sure it's well watered.
  11. If you're using an artificial tree, make sure it's “Fire resistant” or UL (underwriters laboratories) listed.
  12. Keep a fire extinguisher close by and know how to use it. Remember the PASS rule. PULL/AIM/SQUEEZE AND SWEEP.
